About this event

Basic profiling and optimisation of TensorFlow / Keras tasks running on the national Machine Learning eResearch Platform by Oliver Cairncross (o.cairncross@uq.edu.au)

The Monash eResearch Centre in collaboration with the University of Queensland’s Research Computing Centre is conducting a hands-on profiling workshop for researchers working with TensorFlow or Keras on the national Machine Learning eResearch Platform (MLeRP). The workshop will cover basic code profiling and optimisation to make the best use of the platform.

This workshop is aimed for researchers that have little or no experience with profiling. Nevertheless, participants are expected to have general experience with Python, Jupypter Notebooks and machine learning. Attendees will gain a practical understanding of sizing tasks with respect to memory constraints and how to avoid bottlenecks that lead to poor performance.

The workshop will focus on simple techniques and will avoid advanced (or intermediate topics). Areas that require advanced expertise are highlighted but are not covered in depth.

The workshop is presented and promoted as part of an ML4AU Community of Practice series. MLeRP is a collaboration between Monash University, University of Queensland and QCIF. MLeRP received investment (https://doi.org/10.47486/NML01) from the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC). The ARDC is funded by the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).

  • The workshop is open to Australian and New Zealand researchers. Researchers must have access to the MLeRP platform.

  • Basic Python programming ability is required.

  • Some experience interacting with JupyterLab environment.

  • Attendees will use their own workstation / laptop and participate in the workshop remotely using Zoom.

About the presentation
Numerical simulations, known as the third pillar of the scientific method, play a pivotal role across various fields, from fluid dynamics and molecular modelling to weather forecasting and Earth sciences. Recent advancements have led to a novel computational paradigm that integrates numerical algorithms with data-driven models. This approach not only enhances accuracy but also enriches the insights gained by researchers. SmartSim, an open-source project maintained by HPE, stands at the forefront of this evolution. It enables scientists to incorporate AI capabilities directly into their simulations, thus overcoming the limitations of traditional methods and achieving previously unattainable computational feats. This talk will showcase examples where SmartSim has been instrumental in pushing the boundaries of scientific simulation.

About the Event

To efficiently manage GPU resources and reduce entry barriers, Monash University, UQ, QCIF, and ARDC have implemented a machine learning service known as the Machine Learning eResearch Platform (MLeRP). They have also developed user-friendly training materials for easy adoption. MLeRP bridges the gap, offering the interactivity of a notebook and the computational power of an HPC environment, allowing resource sharing among users when code is not actively running. This platform is set to launch on November 7th and will be introduced by the Monash University team during this presentation. The team will delve into what sets MLeRP apart from other HPC platforms and how to leverage its hardware effectively. The presentation will include an overview of MLeRP's features, a live demonstration, and a brief introduction.

Join us for our June event, where Oliver Cairncross will share their journey from 'conda to pip for ML.

"It can be difficult (or impossible) to create ML environments using Anaconda if package dependencies don't match infrastructure. When base libraries and drivers can't be updated or installed ad hoc to match a multitude of package requirements (i.e., HPC) things get painful. I've started to build these packages using pip to match given infrastructure and created wheels (pre built binaries) that could potentially be used by end users. I’ve only used this for my own work–no testing with general users. Nevertheless, I’m happy to discuss what I’ve covered so far; which includes:

  • Cuda and ROCm (AMD) drivers;

  • NCCL (Nvidia) and RCCL (AMD) GPU communication libraries;

  • Various MPI flavors;

  • The Gloo communication library; and

  • The Tensorflow and Horovod frameworks."

We also want to provide a good space for the usual nonsense and banter that arises when you get a group of us in one spot.

ML Fridays: Inside Transformers with Amazon SageMaker and HuggingFace

The transformer is one of the most popular state-of-the-art deep (SOTA) learning architectures that is mostly used for natural language processing (NLP) tasks. Ever since the advent of the transformer, it has replaced RNN and LSTM for various tasks. The transformer also created a major breakthrough in the field of NLP and also paved the way for new revolutionary architectures such as BERT.

Join this session

  • To dive deep into Transformers, and understand how it uses the encoder-decoder architecture for a language translation task.

  • We will learn how transformers overcome one of the major challenges which we had in recurrent models like RNN/LSTM in capturing the long-term dependency. Later we will learn about BERT and see how it differs from other embedding models and build a Disaster Tweet Analysis system.
